Learning
that connects,
celebrates and empowers
the North.
Shifting Ice: The Northern Learning Council is led by Yukon Literacy Coalition, Northwest Territories Literacy Council and Ilitaqsiniq.
We are building a network of Northern organizations who share values and have a circumpolar reach.
We support, protect and celebrate non-formal learning that is experiential and reflective of the societies in which we live.
Enhancing and sustaining community capacity is at the heart of the work that we do.
What do we do?
Our Mission & Vision
To develop a network of northern organizations with
shared values and a circumpolar reach. Together, we will foster, create and support collaborative, community centered approaches to lifelong learning.

Our Approach
What is Northern Learning?
An interconnected, responsive and empowered way of learning, relying on knowledge of the land and the unique cultures of the North.
Northern Learning is both a way of thinking and a way of doing. It is applicable to the Northern experience and can also inspire new ways of thinking, doing, and being for other regions.

Our Social Enterprise
The Shifting Ice Shop
Through our commitment to community capacity building, cultural preservation and cross-territorial collaboration, we aim to celebrate the diversity and richness of northern art and goods while nurturing pathways for both artistic and personal growth. Our social enterprise aims to support vibrant makers and promote lifelong learning through skill development in and across Canada’s North.
Proceeds from sales go directly toward northern makers and Shifting Ice’s community-centered learning initiatives.
